dudes and chicks

I hate my iphone but I also love it…a lot.

I hate it because I never put the bloody thing down.  I read less, look out the window less, get less work done.  But I love it because I get to hear about things that I wouldn’t necessarily read about or stumble across on MSN news.  One of those things was something I found on Twitter and was comments made by Adam Carolla about female comedians.  I was scrolling through my twitterfeed when up came a few comments mentioned this guy and after a wee bit of searching I found he was trending after he had said and I quote:

“The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks,”

“When you’re picking a basketball team, you’ll take the brother over the guy with the yarmulke. Why? Because you’re playing the odds. When it comes to comedy, of course there’s Sarah SilvermanTina FeyKathy Griffin—super-funny chicks. But if you’re playing the odds? No.”

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I’ve done my fair share when it comes to moaning about women in comedy {see here} but labelling us all so bluntly and making such a bold statement is…well…isn’t it old fashioned?  Isn’t it like saying ‘All men think with their dicks’ or ‘All men cheat’ or ‘Size doesn’t matter’?  These things simply aren’t true – Don’t lump and label it’s ignorant. Are we still saying Dudes and Chicks too?  I know I say brill and that’s deemed old fashioned but maybe it’s an american thing that I’m simply not getting?!
With more twitter scouring I found a reply from Jen Kirkman that lead to a response her Dad had to Coralla’s comments:

These modern day men that think women are not funny and this guy that has come forward and said comedy is a man’s game and that women are not good comedy writers or comedians, I take with a grain of salt. This “pretty famous guy” sounds like he’s from the Middle East.

I ask you, what would “I Love Lucy” be without Lucille Ball. Sid Caesar show without Imogene Cocoa. Mary Tyler Moore Show without Mary Tyler Moore. Laugh In without Ruth Buzzi or Goldie Hawn. George Burns Show without Gracie Allen. Mama’s Family without Carol Burnett and Vicky Lawrence. And The Carol Burnett show without Carol Burnett. Whitney Cummings new show. Chelsea Lately Show without Chelsea Handler and the female comedians. These are a few shows that come to mind. Another thing, these ladies were and are all good Business Managers.

Comedy is not only a man’s game but also a women’s game. Always remember, women understand men but men do not understand women. Therefore, men are taking a back seat and they don’t appreciate that. This is America and people are entitled say what they want – right, wrong or indifferent. Women are usually right more than men.

When some guy says as a rule comedy is a man’s game really irks me. I’ll tell you why. This guy  probably feels that doctors and lawyers is a man’s game. Politicians is a man’s game. They probably still think that women should be kept in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. By the same token he probably feels that only women should be teachers and not men, only women should be stewardess and not men, only women should be nurses and not men. You get the picture.

It’s a good thing these guys weren’t running our country during WWII. Women ran our factories in producing all our war material and even flew planes from America overseas to foreign countries for our pilots to fly in combat. Women even started the professional women’s baseball team during the war.

I have seen a lot of comedy shows at the MGM and the Foxwoods Theater at Foxwoods Casino. I personally think women comedians are as equal to men comedians if not better than their male counterpart. I personally would rather attend  a show with female comedians  than male comedians. – Love, Dad”

I don’t know you Mr. Kirkman but I love you and you have managed to say it all for us.  As Jen says herself {see the whole piece here} ‘Again – this is a guy from the generation where women WERE barefoot and pregnant and he is HORRIFIED at how backwards things seem to be going and the way that men of my generation treat their sisters. If more men were like my dad, girls wouldn’t ever have to feel like second class citizens. Love you Big Ron! ‘

We bitch and moan and crtiisize and judge when we are insecure.  I’ve done it and I know that I’ll always feel awful afterwards but when we’re not happy with our lot then we feel the need to put others down.  I feel sorry for Adam Carolla’s lack of contemporary art and culture.  He obviously hasn’t seen Bridesmaids {written and ruled by women}, The Office: An American workplace {episodes written by and also staring women}, Tiny Furniture and Girls {written by and starring women} and over here Dead Boss {written by and starring women}, Anna Crillyand Katy Wix {funny women full stop}, Grandma’s house {women are the best things in it}.

Adam is right in some respects dudes are funnier than chicks….sometimes…..and sometimes chicks are funnier than dudes.

Damn I pity the chances of his daughter.

I truly hope she doesn’t grow up to lump and label men into ‘small minded’ and ‘misinformed’….they’re not all like that.
